Profile Story

The word “impossible” does not exist in the world of Michel’le Barlow. All it took was a little doubt from her father to ignite motivation.
There are many things that Barlow is passionate about, saying “I wouldn’t do anything I don’t love because I put my heart in everything I do.”  A stylist at Doll’d Up Beauty Salon, in Atlanta Georgia; she enjoys beautifying each client that that sits in her chair. At the age of 3 sitting in her mother’s salon, Barlow admired how her mother did hair and soon discovered that she would follow behind her footsteps. She started practicing her skills on Barbie Dolls, which lead to a salon mannequin head and eventually cosmetology school.
She attended high school during the day and cosmetology school at night; obtaining both a high school diploma and cosmetology license after graduation.  Nothing is too hard for her to accomplish.  Sister, Tyria Roper said, “She is a true go-getter and Michel’le is going to get what Michel’le wants.” Roper compared her to reality star, Tamar Braxton, describing how Barlow is spoiled and has acquired a beyond conceited attitude while achieving her goals. When it comes to Barlow, she will not take “no” for an answer.
Behind such a pretty face there is a warm heart and compassionate spirit. Close friend, Terri Abeny grew to love her the first minute they met during their freshman year at Clark Atlanta University. “She will do anything for anybody,” Abeney said.
Barlow wants to help others through her career. A mass media major, concentrating in television, she hopes to challenge reality entertainment by writing, directing and producing her own reality television show. “Instead of centering reality T.V. on the life of a celebrity, we should show the true reality of our world,” Barlow said. She explained how the goal of her show is to expose different people’s real, non-scripted lives.  Her show will demonstrate the hardship and struggles many people go through.
Beauty and brains is not too much to handle if you’re Michel’le Barlow. Setting goals and then accomplishing them is like icing on the cake, but having a big enough heart to love everything you do is like the smile on a fat kids face.

Personal Statement

Clark Atlanta University is the birthplace of teaching students to become the best in everything they do. My matriculation at Clark Atlanta has prepared me to develop the skills and knowledge about every aspect in the Mass Media Art Program. When a person has discovered their passion, he or she will do whatever is necessary to better prepare them in their craft.  My career goals are to become a very prominent figure in the entertainment industry and own a film studio. I believe that I am the next generation whose responsibility is to uphold the positive image of African Americans in the entertainment industry. Everyday I strive harder to achieve my dreams;  like Clark Atlanta’s motto, “I’ll find a way or make one” is something that I have internalized. It reminds me that failure is an inevitable.
Having this attitude along with faith has made me become a more optimistic person when applying for internships, academics, and working towards my aspirations. My journey at Clark Atlanta University has been amazing and hopefully I made my mark on campus to inspire others to accomplish beyond their goals. I firmly believe that everyone has a dream, but the next step is to make it become a reality.  In the famous words of Eleanor Roosevelt say, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." Therefore I will not give up my dreams in being successful.
